Card Weaving with a Selvedge

Finally got video number two done. This one shows how to card weave a design with a selvedge on both sides. The sound isn't great but hubby's camera work is excellent.

The original soundtrack had to go. I weave outside and there was a particularly loud robin nearby chirping every few seconds! Changing the recording location would have meant loosing the great evening light. What's a girl to do? A voiceover of course!  Always something new to learn.

Finding a room inside the house to record in was also a challenge. My sewing room ended up being the best but the sound still isn't great.  I may have to start saving egg cartons and come up with a whole new decorating scheme for the bathroom. The sound will be great with them stapled to the walls!

In the end I'm pretty happy with the result.  I'm working on Christmas presents now. More on those later!

Weave on!

  1. I'm cardweaving on an inkle loom I was given. Works pretty well except that the twists build up and that annoys me—offends my sense of neatness—even if I can push them back.

This video was less clear to me than the first one, though I may just be a bit dense. I'm not sure about the selvedge. Is that warped in just one color? Is that the only difference?

I found with one of my bands made with a coarser thread that the outside warp threads looked loose, because they jump a couple of weft threads. Is there any way to make those outside edges tighter?

Thanks for the instruction. BTW, you've got a nice voice, NB.

  2. OMG I can't believe I missed your comment! I'm soooo sorry!
The color of the selvedge depends on what you want in the design. The difference between the selvedge cards and the 'pattern' ones (all the rest of them) is that the selvedge cards always turn the same direction. That's why they build up so much twist.

I'm still searching and experimenting, but I haven't found a way to get rid of the darned twist. It's the main reason I don't use an inkle loom for card weaving. I can't stand it either! I prefer my flat loom that lets me move the twist out of the way or constantly comb it out.

As for your loose looking warp threads, well, I'm not sure what you mean when you say they 'jumped a couple of weft threads'. Try making sure your tension is tight and that you neaten your weft threads with each pass of the shuttle.

Let me know how it turns out! I'll try to pay better attention this time!
